What the Frak?
Frak Media was founded on 1 April 2007, officially launching on 15 April 2007. We seek to become a definitive destination for science fiction fans. One of our primary assets is the science fiction fanbase itself. Utilizing user generated and edited content, we aim to help provide a place and a structure where fans can document, and thereby celebrate, their favorite science fiction shows.

Wasn’t that a great idea… when it was called Wikipeda?

Wikipedia is huge. Although it is an excellent repository of general knowledge, it is hard for the structure and policies of all of Wikipedia to satisfy the needs of all topics. It is also difficult to police such a large area, enforcing accuracy across all topics. We feel that this is a niche that can be filled by smaller communities, who are able to adapt their structure to their unique needs and enforce stricter standards to maintain a higher degree of accuracy.

Fine. What about that Wikia place, then?

Wikia is great. However, we didn’t want to give up the reigns to somebody else. We wanted the freedom, flexibility, and adaptability that comes with independence. Also, we’re not just going to be about wikis. In the future we hope to explore other ways of connecting, communicating, and collaborating using new and exciting web technologies.

What have you done for me lately?

Well, the Battlestar Wiki, for starters. Created by Joe Beaudoin back in February 2005, the Battlestar Wiki is a contributor-driven resource for the Battlestar Galactica series (past and present). Featuring extensively cited articles, podcast transcripts, and interaction with the production crew, the Battlestar Wiki has become a “damned exhaustive compendium of BSGness” (BSGCast.com).

Well, ain’t that just dandy — and Battlestar Galactica’s frelling boring, what else have you done for me?

Glad you asked! That’s just the beginning! A Eureka Wiki, a Sanctuary Wiki, a Babylon 5 Wiki, and a bunch of other things that could be added here. Of course, if you have any splendid ideas as to what we can do for your inflated ego, you can always drop a line to us at feedback@frakmedia.net. Batman Wiki anyone? :)

How do you support the servers and sites that you run — it must be expensive?

A very good question indeed! All the crew members of Frak Media production volunteer our time to this cause. While we do not currently profit off of our current productions, we do however place ads on them and use that income to help pay for the servers and software needed to run the sites. We endeavor to ensure that the advertising not detract from the content, and you can help us out by not blocking the ads that we serve.
